As Reformed, we pray for the Pope of prayer

It’s only natural, isn’t it? “What do you think, we are reformed!” – It is certainly not natural to find and walk the narrow path between those who walk the broad highway of these two opposing opinions and have a similar understanding, neither today nor at home. According to some, the even bigger “scandal” is that we pray as Reformed pastors.

In our morning and evening prayer with my fellow servant Klaudia, not only during the papal visit, on occasion, but for ten years quietly and continuously for Pope Franciscus. For the Christian man who, even under the papal tiara symbolizing spiritual power and the shiny, once-wear, expensive pontifex vestments, remains first and foremost a modest and humble brother. The one who arrived at the shiny Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica in black high-heeled shoes.

Since he became the Holiness of Rome 10 years ago, he has never once worn the silk shoes that belong to all popes. We pray for the man about whom, since his election, I have had to write and publish with the spirit of inner prompting and theological, believing Christian conviction, under the guidance of God’s Spirit – pneumatically, by command from above, by inspiration.

For example, on March 15, 2013, the protestant agnusradio.ro from Cluj-Napoca reported on the procedure of his election under the title “Not an eye was left dry in the Sistine Chapel” on the side. In the year of his election, he also wrote about this twice on the Cluj-Napoca blog: “The pedestrian pope and the transformation of Brazilian Christianity” (July 23, 2013), and then under the title “Holy management” versus monetary dictatorship (November 29, 2013). And then again every year, on topics like: “I apologize to you for the Catholics tempted by the devil” (2014), then on: “For the first time in history, a pope opened the UN General Assembly” (2015). However, an article written in 2016 remains the most profound and most lasting experience as an author: “In my dream, as a reformed person, I talked with the Pope – Let our thoughts and words kneel before God”.

Now that I, along with my Hungarian Catholic brothers, await the arrival of the head of the church and the pilgrim pope, my brother in Christ, with interest and prayer, the dream images come to mind. A glimpse of this, when I was able to walk with the pedestrian pope in the soul-lifting great silence of St. Peter’s Basilica:

“Then we moved on. The pope also made sure to walk on my left the whole time, holding my left arm tightly. What manners! The Pope’s tactful sense of etiquette was also necessary, because we could only get ahead through such a crowd that was not regulated by a cordon, there were no Swiss Guards, security guards, bodyguards, there were neither swords nor pistols, no human protection of any kind. Only attentive and respectful tact. Humility reigns. I asked: “Aren’t you afraid?” The answer was clear: – Why should I be afraid? I did not receive the Spirit of fear… Slowly we arrived at the exit of the church. He said softly: “Excuse me, I have work to do.” Mass must be said. Before he could continue, I took the floor somewhat impolitely: – As a Hungarian Reformed, I wish that the Spirit of our God would sanctify his life, his thoughts, and his words, from which he would not leave us, even the Reformed, out of them next time! It is interesting how the Lord of the dream shapes our words! Because this was the answer of Pope Francis: – I also wish God’s blessing on you. Then, as if he had read the above in my soul, he added, barely audibly: – Yes, that’s right: our thoughts and words must kneel before God! Let’s show this by kneeling together in prayer. I experienced the uplifting bliss of this moment. Kneeling, the joy of our bursting soul making a pilgrimage to God from the depths of humility. It was a glorious moment. I can still feel its mood even now, even after the dream has left…”.

Today, on the first day of the papal visit, I am sitting here in the “little chapel” of my study. In front of me on a black mini wooden cross with the body of our Lord Christ made of sackcloth, which a Latin American boy brought to me during one of my trips to Rome, just after the Pope’s address at noon on Sunday.

The branch of my oily, shiny green, evergreen table palm arches above and around it. Appropriately for the current papal visit, two books of Pope Francis: Apostolic Exhortation beginning with the Joy of the Gospel and Prayer – The Breath of New Life c. volume. Not far from these two papal volumes, two truly Reformed works, close at arm’s length, are my everyday companions among the desktop editions of the Bible in Hungarian and other languages. János Kálvin’s very clear, conceptual cathedral on the system of the Christian religion, an excellent translation of the 1559 edition of the famous Institutio Christianae Religionis into our modern language by our Transylvanian father Dezső Buzogány. And the book on prayer by Rudolf Bohren, the incomparable, Spirit-led, pneumatic Swiss Reformed theologian, published by Kálvin Publishing, entitled Let’s Learn to Pray. Why am I mentioning all this? Because in these three great worshipers speak: beyond times, ages, places and denominations in the harmony of the Holy Spirit, consonantly, in unison, as in the harmony of the most beautiful pieces of music, and as at the first Pentecost. Calvin, Bohren, Pope Francis. It’s strange, but it says the same thing: life is prayer – prayer is life. Prayer is the lungs and heart of our Christian life. And our personal line, and the “holy tool” that lifts the fate of the world from the death march. The prima et ultima ratio – oratio as a sustaining traversal of existence: because our first and last chance, when there is nothing else left, our only rational action – is prayer.

Standing on the foundation or rampart of this fundamental Christian truth, prayer is not a passing dream, but the steel structure of our existence, the eternal source of our daily peace, our most peaceful weapon of the Spirit.

This is what can “sprout” flowers, life, future, survival, blossom out of itself. The “miracle weapon” of prayer. Universal, religious, our common core value, our diamond reserve, beyond denominational dogmas. What and how Pope Francis puts it: “In the face of people who do not have good intentions, who only seek scandal, who only incite discord, who only want to destroy, even in the family: all that remains is silence. And the prayer”. Then a few lines down: “When I pray, I always take the Scriptures in my hands. And peace is growing in me.” How protestant thoughts! Because really deep, Christian truths are universal, like Christ himself. In the exhortation at the beginning of the Joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium), it is not by chance that he writes about “the irrevocable ecclesiastical renewal”, which is the work of the Holy Spirit and prayer. Since he received seeing eyes from the Lord, the Holy Spirit gives his name to the many pains and human miseries of our time through his grace of insight. And the root causes: exclusionary wealth, the idolization of money, violence-inciting inequality, some cultural distortions, and the specific pitfalls of urban cultures. It is also through the calling of the Spirit in prayer and in the thus created pneumatic community that human speech is transformed into a personal one, the Word becomes alive through spiritual, pneumatic reading, into fire, warmth, and life mediated by letters.

I was close to Pope Francis at his 2022 Christmas Eve liturgy. The humility and restraint of his words intensified my attention even more. He was crystal clear. Personally, biblically, with love. I wrote about this on the Felvidék.ma portal under the title “As a Hungarian Reformed at Pope Francis’ Christmas Eve homily in St. Peter’s Basilica”. His closing prayer calling to Jesus was written in my soul: “Help us to live and practice our faith in reality.” We completely agreed/understood Pope Francis on this then and now.

With a good heart and a good conscience, we do what he asks at the end of almost every speech before, during and after his visit to Hungary: Pray for me! We pray for you Franciscus…

If you want peace, prepare for peace!

The painting above was made by Finnish Hugo Simberg in 1903. It was quite a long time ago, but his message is poignantly true even today. The “wounded angel” (this is the name of the picture) is carried by two boys. There are traces of blood on the angel’s wings, and his bandaged head was also hit. His whole being exudes dejection. Is the guardian angel disabled?

Will. But it also reminds us of life, the protection of which it would be our task as a guardian angel. Or are the guardian angels already victims? Does ordinary cannibalism, the Cain residing in humans, reclaim and enforce its human-destructive instinct so much? The diabolical, Abel-killing original sin? Indeed, only the thousands-year-old Cain “password” can prevail under the sky: IF YOU WANT PEACE, PREPARE FOR WAR!?

While perhaps the most ancient form of conflict management emerged in humanity as a counterbalance to Cainism and indiscriminately destructive cannibalism: religion?

The world religions. To corner the archenemy with sacred and cultic, religious and moral pressure, or to try to keep the murderous beast under control through individual religiosity, world religions, organizational forms, and the ever-increasing and diverse array of religious tools? In the previous parts of our series, we learned about the peace potential inherent in world religions and so historically indispensable: the beast-taming and limiting tools of Buddhism, Judaism, and Catholicism.

The basic truth emerged as an almost universal principle:

if peace is not born in the human heart, if murderous impulses, conflict-seeking restlessness, and destructive impulses are disarmed with the help of God’s overwhelming power, there will be no lasting peace.

The most brilliant thoughts, the most dramatic poems of destiny, and the destructive miracles of the most frightening superweapons and secret arsenals designed by artificial intelligence will not be able to bring about the civilized form necessary for personal existence and planetary coexistence in every person, in every generation, the basic condition of our existence, the much-desired PEACE.

Indeed, through the tools designed by the digital age, Madách’s dilemma of being or not being is burned onto our skin, and even the planetary creation. They rang the bell in the dilemma of a threat on the scale of humanity and a happy promise of a future on the scale of the earth, and before they finally rang the bell: there is nothing to wait for, the time has come for peace-focused education and international, strict regulation.

When the death-principle “if you want peace, prepare for war” principle, the many thousand-year-old stereotype of the concept comes into direct conflict with the life-principle “if you want peace, prepare for peace” principle. Today’s war cannibalism proves more bloody and destructive than anything else: either the digital age of education for peace is coming, and there will be a future – or sharpshooting destruction, softened and drilled for war, and there will be no future – for anyone!

Biblical and Protestant principles of a just peace, still existing tools

The Bible was and is the starting point for Protestant peace ethics and future ethics. They only wanted to know about the just peace before us, very correctly based on the Book of Life. He tries to eradicate the anti-God, innate tendency of conquering man in the bud: in his heart, in his thinking, and then in the will dictated by them. So that the blind passion that can destroy everything does not take up residence in the human soul, but the passion that was in Jesus (Philippians 2,5-11).

Paul puts it absolutely clearly: Christ is our peace, who killed the enmity in himself (he did not defeat the enemy, but the enemy!), he came among us and preached peace to both near and far (Ephesians 2:14-17).

That is why both the Old Testament and the New Testament gave the future-guarding life program and peace program as follows: “Strive for peace and follow it!” (Psalms 34,15) – “Whoever wants to enjoy life and see good days, should turn from evil and do good, seek and follow peace” (1 Peter 3,10-11).

The potential changes that occur in personal life multiply dimensionally and can become a community-shaping force, especially by making the culture of family and school education and conflict management the public norm, and they can seep into economic and political structures with a transformative force.

 

There, it will have a community value far exceeding the passivity of pacifism and a normative regulatory effect, where individually and nationally, even in the national curriculum, they will begin to rediscover and interpret its profound connection: “Love and loyalty meet, justice and peace kiss each other” (Psalms 85 ,11).

In Wittenberg, Luther had already moved away from the problem of the just war towards the much more important and promising approach that requires real educational concentration. He stated categorically: “He who starts a war commits injustice. The worldly supremacy (government, king, parliament – drbl.) was not created by God to break the peace and start war, but to maintain the peace and protect it from the warmongers”.

According to the reformer, only life-saving self-defense war has the right to exist. The forced national defender called the war forced warfare. Kálvin similarly argued in Geneva: “The leaders of the public power and the princes were given the weapon not only to restrain private individuals with court judgments, but also to defend the countries entrusted to their protection, if they are attacked hostilely, by war” (Institutio, IV. 20,10 -12).

New-age Protestant aspirations – to eliminate war!

In 1948, the World Council of Churches was founded in Amsterdam. At its first world assembly that same year, on behalf of hundreds of millions of Protestants, they declared: “God’s will does not permit war.”

They asked the member churches to do everything they could to develop the teaching, practice, educational tools, and possibilities of forming a just peace into public morality. The armament doctrine and strategy of deterrence was clearly condemned.

Their ultimate goal was to make it evident to all the inhabitants, leaders and leaders of the earth: the million-year-old cannibalism can only be broken and eradicated if war is eliminated from the toolbox of humanity’s political conflict resolution.

Ensuring political peace must be given absolute priority, negotiations must strive for this at all levels until the last moment (Heidelberg Theses, 1959). In the concept of just peace, the content of the biblical shalom/eirene/pax was unfolded, in the reciprocity that without justice there is no peace, without peace there is no justice, planetary future.

This also means that in contrast to military and violent conflict resolution, non-violent and civil conflict processing must definitely be given priority. This also means that power is regulated by law. Unfair conditions and situations must be eradicated in order to ensure fair development opportunities for everyone. Both in thinking, in diplomacy, and as economic and military power potential increases, all parties must strive to minimize violence.

He announced a beautiful educational program in the first letter of the apostle Peter: As newborn babies, you desire unadulterated spiritual milk, so that you may grow up to salvation (1 Peter 2:2).

There is no doubt that every newborn baby longs for its mother’s unadulterated, natural breast milk, and every mother wants to give her baby this nourishment that comes from her own body. Not formula, not other people’s milk, but the original. (Now we are not dealing with the case that in order to keep the newborn alive, if there is no mother’s milk, another source must be used). Here, Péter uses the image of milk to convey deeper content to his readers. This is indicated by the unusual but key wording that

for the expression unadulterated spiritual milk, the Greek word logikos is also used, the content of which rhymes with logos, the Word. So we can put it simply and in Peter’s sense: the unadulterated (=adolos) spiritual milk is the Word, which every Christian needs so that the life of the newly born Christian does not stagnate, or in fact does not become emaciated, does not permanently wither away.

Even before it unfolds for the glory of God and the benefit of others. God’s creative intention is not withering, atrophy, or shrinking, but growth, development, and fulfillment. In the Greek and Hellenic thinking of the time, the word logos primarily did not mean the Word of God, but that everything in the created world, in nature, works according to God’s logic and laws. The Creator gave the immanent laws necessary for proper functioning with spiritual precision. In this sense, unadulterated milk is the thinking that is attuned to the Creator’s will and laws, and follows his spiritual order in everyday life.

But in Peter’s time, logos also meant meaning, the fact that everything has a place and purpose in the whole, be it a mustard seed or an atomic particle or just a newborn and the mother who feeds him.

The meaning of a mother’s existence is provided by the nourishment, growth and development of her child, this is the logo of her motherhood. The purpose of a child’s existence is to be fed from an unadulterated, pure source, to long for what is unadulterated, original, true and pure. As a Christian man, to the Word of God, to the guidance and nourishment of his Spirit, to the pneumatic growth.

But the word logicos also means that it corresponds to the logos, i.e. it corresponds to the Word of God. A lifestyle according to the Word, growth according to the Word, keeping in mind that growth is not an end in itself! The purpose of growth is progress in salvation, in a life pleasing to God. It is not necessary to grow against others, but so that everyone can achieve progress according to the life program laid down by the Creator, fulfillment in living according to the norms of salvation and the Word. Péter puts it quite specifically, specifying exactly what we need to strip off and leave behind so that growth is not just a false statistical self-indulgence, but also a useful, helpful, constructive, constructive life and way of life for others.

He expects the abandonment of such things from his Christian brothers in Asia Minor, who have rather turned from pagans into followers of Christ: putting away all evil, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy and all slander (1 Pet 2,1).

A Christian has to deal with himself. Primarily with yourself, to live a logical, purposeful life in accordance with God’s Word. We owe ourselves not only self-education, but also self-education. And by not removing the mote in other people’s eyes, while tolerating the beam in our own (Matthew 7:3).

It is not enough to do everything for body shaping in the gym, but in God’s gym, in the spiritual-spiritual gym, under the weights of His Word, we must also do the self-shaping that can mold, shape and train our lives for God’s good pleasure, taking care of balance. After all, it is not healthy, clean, or logical if we only train our bodies and remain internally unkempt, raw and shapeless beings. But neither is it if we neglect the fitness of our bodies.

Totus homo – we must shape, train, train and educate the whole person proportionately. And in the meantime, we cannot become Hippocrates, who expect development and growth from others, but not from themselves, and even fall behind compared to their former selves.

The unadulterated word, adoloz, is also an important signal. In the ancient mystery religions, various types of flavored or fermented milk were used for intoxicating, mind-altering drinks. Péter’s words are a criticism of the falsified mixtures of cult places that can be found in almost every city in Asia Minor. With his clairvoyant faith, he was against the religious mixes and fakes of the ancient world made up of human ideas, the practices that promised feigned happiness, even if they were offered in the name of smart or beautiful gods and goddesses.

Did the Word of God make its way a quo vadis, Domine? “Where are you going, Sir?” Peter. He tied the sword of the Word to his inner man, the double-edged sword that cuts through to the point of uncovering thoughts, deceitful ideas of God, and leading human predictions of happiness.

This is the huge task of the Word even today. And he does. If we only think of our country: TV shows, broadcast times, and channels abound with predictions, falsified “milk messages” mixed with various horoscopes, promising salvation, promising happiness, and prophesying luck. As a caricature of religious freedom. As a market product of spiritual guidance, deception, sometimes causing serious personal damage. There has never been such a need for the unadulterated milk that truly leads to salvation, the Logos, the Pure Word, the man-forming, character-training, stabilizing, therapeutic, guiding Word of God to reach our hearts through the inspired and inspiring Words of the Bible.

For some time now, I have been reading with great spiritual pleasure and longing, as Péter puts it, the recollections of Anna Dostoyevsky, the wife of the incomparably insightful Russian writer Dostoyevsky, about their life together. He recalls some moments in his 550-page book, which show the longing for unadulterated milk, the Word, in the daily life of the great character analyst almost until his death. His thirst for Jesus, which was also reflected in the fact that the book of Jesus, which he intended to be the fifth gospel, was among his writing plans for the last year of his life, which he had not yet guessed – 1881. The 60-year-old insightful genius could no longer write this (the secrets belong to the Lord!). But I do know that the New Testament that he gave to a little girl on the way to the penitentiary camp in Siberia could have been his daily unadulterated milk in the harsh penal barracks, leading him to give his life completely to his Saviour. And this was also shown in his premonition of death and his preparation for the transition. On the day of his death, he again took the holy book in his hands, opened it and read from Matthew 3:14:

“Let me now, because this is how we should fulfill all justice”.

With a bleeding lung, he added: “Annácska, I’m going to die today. Know, Anna, that I have always loved you passionately, I have never cheated on you, not even in thought.” Pure, unadulterated milk, the Word and its striving for compliance accompanied him until the great transition. A few months after his death, the widow visited Count Tolstoy, who was also in his frailty at the time, the grand old aristocrat of Russian literature. Tolstoy also found it difficult to speak, but this is what he told Anna at the end of the visit: “Dostoyevsky made the impression on me – (and they never met in person, only through their writings – the author notes) – as someone who lived in a truly Christian way, with reason and Jesus’ way of life life”. Just like Luther, whose name originally came from the German translation of the pure, unadulterated, pure Greek word of the Peter’s Word quoted above: lauter became Luther.

Apostle Peter, Luther, Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy – these are just a few examples of the Word’s deep and permanent truth and its reality-shaping, personality-shaping power. There is also something to ponder on Quasimodogeniti Sunday. Helping and further thinking for Dear Readers!

Dear Bálint Áron Duray!

Allow it to be conceived in a great, boyish sense of responsibility, and to its initiative that touches the entire Carpathian homeland, and even universal, contemporary Hungarians, whose goal is “to preserve the intellectual legacy of my father, Miklós Duray, in a dignified manner”, with the Word of God, let me express my sincere and prayerful wish for a blessing. I quote the words of the apostle Paul: “We ask you, brothers and sisters, to appreciate those who labor among you… for their work, appreciate and love them very much!” (1 Thessalonians 5:12-13).

I believe that your initiative is in perfect harmony with the cited apostolic, Christian norm, as stated in a www.duray.sk it is already clearly visible on the website, in the expanding archive of his father’s huge, rich work of Hungarian heritage. In the words of the Word, he earned, maintains and nurtures the respect of his generation and the generations that come after him with his uncompromising, exceptionally high-level intellectual work.

Dear Bálint Áron Duray! The Lord of our personal life and history made it so that, in addition to spiritual sympathy, attention, contemporary interest, and respect, I had the opportunity to meet his Father twice. I recall these two occasions with fondness. First of all, when, according to my memory, the in the church of the Great Reformed Congregation of Cecei two outstanding Hungarian personalities were also present at the unveiling of the national flag. We wrote July 3, 1999. Cecen the National Social Circle donated a national flag with a coat of arms to the local Reformed parish, and László Tőkés bishop, the honorary president of the RMDSZ. Miklós Duray representative, and the honorary president of the Hungarian Coalition Party a Loyalty Award. László Tőkés preached at the ceremony. A few minutes before the start of the ceremony, I approached the Duray couple sitting in the first pew. At that time, I was one of the editors of Hungarian Radio’s Reformed broadcasts, and I asked his Father for a quick interview. When he heard that I was a Reformed minister, he immediately introduced his wife, who was kindly and gently smiling: “So now we are here at a Calvinist council, since my wife has ancestors of a Reformed ministerk…”.

Simeon engraved the Holy Week’s fuller and wider horizon, giving a true interpretation of life and meaning, on the hearts of his people when presenting the Child: He is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and is a sign against which they say… so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed (Luke 2:34-35). . This is also absolutely true for the events of Holy Week: then and now, the week of confession is also the miserable or the holy week. When they become manifest, the thoughts of many hearts, the hidden thoughts of man, are revealed. A short chronicle of Maundy Monday – the pulsating physical and spiritual movement of Jesus

An inexhaustible army of paintings, sculptures, bas-reliefs, illustrations of codex pages, musical and poetic works, novels and short stories, and plays analyze, praise and admire the last earthly week of the life of Jehoshua = Jesus the Redeemer. There is no other person in history with whom so many and so many people, and probably many more until the end of the world, would deal with him. “I reached Jerusalem. He entered the temple and began to drive out those who gave and bought in the temple”. He asks the big question: “Is it not written: My house will be a house of prayer for all peoples?” (Mark 11:15ff).

A harsh reckoning indeed. The speechless Master, who entered humbly yesterday on the back of a donkey, begins to cleanse with holy anger within a day. For the protection of the church, which was turned into a robbers’ cave, for the salvation of those who came there. That they use what their ancestors built for the glory and glorification of God. How do we arrive at the religious church of our village, city, capital? Is there in our hearts the restlessness of buying and selling, the fresh and unsettling memory of our successful or unsuccessful, sometimes sinful transactions? It is no wonder that when the chief priests and scribes heard the news of this reforming Jesus, “they looked for a way to lose him. They were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching” (Mark 11:15-19). In their eyes, it was not the physical cleansing of the church that was really dangerous, but the cleansing of the soul and heart, the cleansing of people, i.e. the teaching of Jesus. Simeon’s temple prophecy spoken years earlier was fulfilled: that the thoughts of many hearts would be revealed.

Holy Monday of Jesus, the chronicle of the cleaning of the church, helps us in our restoration, complete renovation and renewal. How we try to operate our lives as intended.

To learn to distinguish between the worthy and the unworthy for a lifetime, to Him and to us. Which can turn our hearts, our thinking, our entire lifestyle into a den of robbers. Or that we should somehow be built into a church that helps and promotes the good of others. Step by step. As Paul warned the Corinthians. So that Holy Week can truly be a great week for us, not just a stereotypical (folk) celebration of our one-dimensional pleasures and habits: “Don’t you know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17). The earthly temple in Jerusalem and our lives, our physical and spiritual belongings, are meant for much more than being a playground for small tricks, manipulations, and corruptions. We can find our God-given dignity, our true self, between Jerusalem and Bethany, on the road together with Jesus. This Holy Week as well, as a truly salutary realization…

--UNESCO invites the world’s population to collect and have the opportunity to have lifelong book experiences and reading experiences. At his conference in Paris in 1995, he declared that every year on April 23, an international day of acton, the celebration of books and reading, should be held worldwide. As a special manifestation of this, I read this morning in the Catholic Word calendar: Giornata mondiale del libro… And I remember the experiences that books have given me over the decades.

For messages and sentences that were written deep into my soul. For those existential touch and smell experiences that digital book reading can never replace: the smell of a new book, the beauty of book covers, the dedications that make each work personal. And on our own imprints, as for example, on each opening page of the sermon series I bought in the GDR, my name, my address in Wittenberg, and the time of purchase of the book are stamped there.

What a personal experience, a pure memory of joy! What a surplus compared to a functional, read-only tablet or computer!

But it’s much more than that. And different. Because the states of excitement that I was waiting for in the Kádár era are reappearing in me, we were waiting for a much larger readership than today, for example, for the newer volumes of poems by Gyula Illyés, or the newer poems of Sándor Weöres, Áprily, Váczi, Ladányi, and others, the Transylvanian Helikon he donated his treasures to his homeland, the Avant-garde Symposium and Bridge magazine of the Southern Forum.

The novelties of Sütő, Kányádi, Páskándi and others fueled this personal reading excitement and curiosity. How the initiates of the pen see and make visible the world that we have experienced, seen and appreciated in one way or another, in our own way. In the years between my 20s and 30s, I experienced very strongly the role of books as a bridge. Just as we met each other in the love of the Hungarian word and in the aesthetic beauty of its cultivation and appreciation – in the service apartments of Transylvanian teachers, in the observed silence of parishes, in the folkloric, delicious conversations of forest walks. And the Bible and book smuggling in civilian diplomacy.

MY WONDERFUL BOOKS

On World Book Day, I see the Hungarian ghost bridges spanning the continents, visible only with the spirit. The creators and communities of Western Europe and overseas. Hungarians and non-Hungarians. For example, the most profound experience is that I received from Argentina in the 1980s Miklós Surányi’s biography of Széchenyi entitled We Are Alone in two volumes, with numerous quotations, a unique publication of the Transsylvania publishing house in polished leather binding, with initial chapter titles, with a gold print of the coat of arms of Transylvania on the cover.

The two beautiful volumes were produced in April 1963 at the Danubio Press in Buenos Aires. How many times have I picked it up just to relive the joy of touch. I still take it out today, from among the several thousand handbooks in my study, from among the most faithful spiritual companions. (I store the other, nearly 17,000 volumes elsewhere). I also received Teilhard de Chardin’s books of reflections from Argentina.



What spiritual bridges these volumes formed between the reformed theologians of Hungary in Kádár and the Catholic translators and curators of Argentina or Rome! Reading ecumenism, boundless, free intellectual experiences. And, of course, I also remember the day when I was freed in the 80s to go to the neighbor, Vienna, and spent half a day rummaging through the novelties of the Wartburg evangelical bookstore, I came across a couple of exciting Jesuit books that analyzed Marxism, refuting what was still dogma in our country. calculating theses. I got into trouble because of them: at the border, customs officials took it along with other volumes, as is customary, but later, with the bishop’s intercession, it was returned to the State Church Affairs Office for “strictly internal use”.

The theological and philosophical bookshelf raids were also strange spiritual bridges elsewhere. The Protestant bookstores in Wittenberg and Heidelberg, the huge bookstore in Helsinki, on the four floors of which I searched in vain for Estonian language books. Like the bookstores in Edmonton and Toronto, where I unsuccessfully searched for books on the history of Canada. Beautiful photo albums of the national parks, the stunning peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the opal green seas, the special wildlife, yes. When I asked why there was no historical treatment, the salesman said with self-conscious pride: Because this country, sir, has more of a future than a past.

SPIRITUAL BRIDGE ROLE – THE BIBLE IS AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD LIST, OUR COUNTRY IS 10TH IN READING TIME

And for me, the bridging role and multidimensional charm of books also means this: a spiritual connection between past-present-future. Between peoples and cultures. Among his poetic and philosophical, theological, thousand-faced readings of people, tastes, creative reflections. And philosophy of existence, the science and art of survival. A spirit bridge, with lights and strange shapes, with the power to mediate and display folk and artificial wonders, and cultural dignity.

And most of all, this role of a bridge appears at Jacob’s gate, and on the mysterious Christmas night, in the heavenly and earthly miracle of the Incarnation, when God, the eternal and invisible, came down from Mary’s womb to this world in the Child’s Son. Because our Father did not want his people to remain fatherless and motherless orphans, they fell into unredeemed depths like lost sheep. I turn the pages of my strange Bible miracles, or crammed in 20 languages ​​on my reading shelf. I look at this year’s statistical graphs and see: the Bible is by far the most read book in the world. 3.9 billion people read it more or less regularly.

China is 3rd, the Czech Republic and Russia are 6th to 7th. on the world list, with an average of 7 minutes. They are followed by Sweden, France, and then our country. Average reading time per week is 6 minutes 48 seconds. The 10th place is just prestigious. In comparison, we also know that 18% of the population barely or does not read at all. I have been to many super apartment miracles here in my country, where books appeared at all or only as an interior decoration element.

The book of books is waiting for you on the spiritual golden bridge. And so many more miracles of writing, in the multi-genre world workshop of the human spirit. Come up to the spiritual bridge of books, please, especially in today’s times, when it also forms a bridge of peace between peoples. Books are personal, hands-on tools for creating peace. Recently, a profile metal statue of the Russian writer Dostoyevsky was inaugurated in Copenhagen, applied to the wall of a typically Scandinavian building. On the red brick wall known from the Hanseatic cities. What a spiritual bridge between Saint Petersburg and the cleanest city in the world, the Danish capital! Not by chance, since the great Danish former contemporary, philosopher and evangelical theologian Kierkegaard is the Danish bridgehead or support of this spirit bridge, who was highly appreciated by Dostoyevsky.

Yes, the books, the writers of the books, are the facilitators of reconciliation, elimination of prejudices, barriers to relations between nations. And quite personally, they are sometimes life-saving straws of wisdom for our lives. As each Word of the Bible is the whole itself. Luther, followed by Erzsébet Túrmezei, wrote about this on now dusty pages: Without Christ every straw is a crushing beam, a burden, With him every crushing beam is a light straw.

In the summer of 2013, a bronze statue was inaugurated in Kyiv. The male-female figure embraces a very European love story before our eyes. Perpetuated in bronze. Their love spans more than half a century and transcends politics. But will the main characters meet again? And is the statue still standing in Kiev?

It was a moment of uplifting emotions, tears, smiles and hugs in 2004 when Italian Luigi Peduto and Ukrainian Mokryna Jurzuk met again on Russian television. More than half a century has passed since they first saw each other in 1943 in the Sankt Pölten forced labor camp in Austria.

Luigi, the more emotional of the two, since he is Italian, hugs Mokryna, or Mária, as he calls her, to his chest and, crying, showers her with name-calling words. He tells her over and over that he is “her Luigi”. Mária remains silent and seems to submit to his embrace, but does not seem very moved.

The special moment of the reunion was immortalized in metal in Kiev and has also become a small tourist attraction. Lovers and visitors are said to touch the statue in the hope that something of the couple’s lasting happiness will be transferred to them.

According to the story, which since 2004 was picked up by Russian and Ukrainian television, as well as the media of half the world, the two protagonists visited each other in their hometowns. The experience was strange and very emotional for both of them. Mária recalled on TV that when she visited Italy, everything seemed small compared to Ukrainian dimensions: trees, food, people and cars. It stuck in his mind that Luigi couldn’t live without Parmesan, and after tasting Ukrainian food, he quickly took to cooking. Pasta and wine dominated the table. Luigi did not like drinking vodka, which did not please Mária. He also didn’t quite like her trying to help him in the garden, where he almost destroyed his beloved raspberry bushes. Seeing this, Mária roared in disbelief: “What are you doing so clumsily?”. Luigi responded with a hug, which both of them calmed down.

The tall, handsome Italian. When asked to turn back the years and describe how their love affair began, Mokryna/Mária gets a little emotional.

– In the camp, in 1944, I was asked to help a tall, handsome Italian concrete worker with the construction of the new barracks. I couldn’t speak Italian, so we could only smile, laugh and make fun of each other, but we quickly developed a relationship. And we made sure we could be together whenever possible.

We both arrived at the Sankt Pölten camp in Austria by very different routes. Me as a forced laborer and Luigi as a prisoner of war. He was on the front line in Split, Croatia, with a regiment of the Guardia di Finanza (the militarized tax police), when in September 1943 Italy, already occupied by the Allies through Sicily, called for an armistice. Giving up their weapons, Luigi’s regiment was surrounded by the Germans and had to march to Budapest on foot. From there they were put on trains and transported to a camp where they worked for German and Austrian industry. Luigi, who was a tailor, was taken to an Austrian POW camp.

One day I noticed a young woman. There were three Ukrainian women and us Italians. They straightened crooked nails with a piece of iron and a hammer, they just hammered the nails all day, Luigi remembers. In the morning they stopped for 15 minutes so we could have breakfast. They brought a large cauldron of soup with no name. It also came with a little bread. Then one day, during this break, I noticed a young woman, maybe 23-24 years old. I was in Croatia for two years, I learned some languages ​​there. Slavic, Slavic, Croatian. Almost one, right? Not too different from Russian. I could say a few words to him, I thought. When I heard that Mokryna had a child, I tried to help her and brought extra food, which I got for sewing various items for my fellow prisoners.

Love unfolded only slowly – then came the Iron Curtain. It wasn’t love at first sight, Luigi recalls. He was kind of cool, just slow to talk to me. But what made me fall in love with him was his little girl. This made my heart very tight. I have suffered a lot in life – my mother died when I was little and I had to take care of my brothers. So I really sympathized with Mária and her child.

They only learned a few words of each other’s languages, but their bond seemed strong. Beyond words, and even without them, they really felt each other. And even after decades, they didn’t forget each other, even though they had to be separated. They were sent back to their own country on orders. Maria could not be reached behind the Iron Curtain.

In the meantime, they got married. They had children and grandchildren. Luigi always kept Mária’s photo with him. “I have not forgotten. Here. He is always with me. I have a lock of my hair, and he has a lock of mine.”

You can’t forget it. In 2004, God intervened. In the form of a Russian TV show. Luigi, now a widower, asks a Ukrainian woman in his town near Naples to help him write a letter to a program to help find lost lovers again, hoping that he can find his Maria with the photos and other clues he has kept.

“We wrote the letter in June,” recalls Luigi. Then we waited and waited and waited. Months passed. June, July, August, September. Then on October 11th, which happened to be my birthday, the phone rang. They asked if I was Luigi Peduto. Yes, it’s me…”.

And then Moscow. The show’s producers said they wanted to fly Luigi to Moscow to reunite with Mokryna. “I immediately went to Salerno. I arranged the passport. I went to Moscow, and on the second night Mária was standing in front of me in the TV studio. Everyone applauded, I was very happy. I was moved to tears. Mária didn’t seem impressed.” The hard life spent on the collective farm meant that he looked much older than Luigi, who is still a bright-eyed old man and happily remembers the beautiful days of his past. Mokryna told a Ukrainian newspaper: “When I saw Luigi, I simply couldn’t believe my eyes. He looked so different. He was tall and thin then, but now he is well built. He was kind and the same blue eyes were looking at me. Mária – he shouted, then hugged and kissed me. Again and again. He called me my little darling. Then he pulled the hair clip out of my hair, which I had given him when we broke up…”.

It was impressive. During interviews and TV shows, Luigi often cried. He resented but was also impressed that Mokryna herself was never shaken. “I’ve never seen him cry, never. And me?”.

Journalists hoped that the couple would eventually marry. Maria’s reaction was strange when asked about a possible offer. “He came out of his house and laughed but didn’t answer. He just laughed…”.

Still, Luigi kept in touch with him. He sent her packages of parmesan cheese and other things he thought would help Maria in her remote village. The news about them, about their commitment to Mária, became a legend. The city of Kiev took the unusual step of erecting a statue of the couple to commemorate their love story. The chief architect of the city put it this way: he hopes that their example will encourage others to form lasting relationships. The statue is part of the city’s effort to move away from its communist past, when only generals and leaders of society were honored with statues. However, the stories of ordinary people can also be worthy of bronze.

At the Lovers’ Bridge. The statue is located right next to the so-called Lovers’ Bridge and has attracted foreign and Ukrainian tourists. Many were captivated by the story of Mária and Luigi. “When I heard this story, tears came to my eyes, it’s so wonderful. And it was funny to watch them meet in a remote Ukrainian village,” said a viewer on the show.

Returning to his home near Naples, Luigi traveled to Ukraine several times during the peacetime before the current war. He looked at the statue and Mokryna in amazement. “When people find out that Luigi and Mária are going there, many people gather there. It is so wonderful that they recognized their own history in the hugging proximity of the statue. This is simply beautiful. Words cannot describe it. At times like this I feel like I have to fall down…” Luigi said ten years ago.

Is the bridge of lovers in Kiev still standing? And the statue of the Italian Luigi and the Ukrainian Mária hugging? And they – are they still alive? Only the story of their love lives on more permanently than ore. In them – and now a little in us too…
